Three City EV Chargers Installation Project for BP Pulse

Three City EV Chargers Installation Project for BP Pulse | Case Study | Aylesford Electrical

Background:

Installing over 100 EV charging points, combining both fast DC chargers and slower AC chargers, Aylesford Electrical successfully balanced the available budgets, power supplies
and the speed of charging required. Plus assisted or directly applied for power upgrades with the Distribution Network Operators (DNO’s), utilising their in-house civil engineering team.

Smart Charging Solutions:

Hybrid Charging Strategy:

Combining DC chargers with AC chargers allows for flexible and scalable solutions, optimizing use of the available power infrastructure while still providing sufficient charging options for different users. Understanding and analysing the requirements of each site was paramount to implementing tailor-made solutions. For example, the York City Hazel Court depot is used by a variety of council maintenance and refuse collecting vehicles, (RCVs). Some vehicles required overnight charging, whilst others, such as the RCVs, would complete a collection round, and then require fast-charging, to allow a follow-on team to continue on another round. Vehicle requirement analysis led to a recommendation for 8 dual DC chargers for 16 vehicles, and a further 40 AC dual socket chargers.

Load Management Systems:

Smart load management systems dynamically balance the available power distribution among the chargers. This ensures that the power supply is used efficiently, preventing overloads
and reducing the need for costly infrastructure upgrades. Maidstone Borough is planning to acquire more electric vehicles, so Aylesford installed 30 single socket AC chargers, and assisted the council in its DNO application to doubling the power from 200amp to 400amp, to futureproof this particular EV charging site. It meant that whilst they currently only have 15 electric vehicles, they will be able to charge 30 vehicles simultaneously as they strengthen their EV fleet. Edinburgh Council have an EV action plan for increasing the provision of EV charging infrastructure across the city – Aylesford have currently installed a third of their first stage chargers, with an accessible and a reliable charging infrastructure to encourage more residents to switch to EVs.

BP were so impressed by the quality of Aylesford Electrical’s installations, they chose the company to install chargers at their North Sea Oil Headquarters in Aberdeen.
